Typography
Malmö University's profile font
In printed media, Malmö University uses classic, clean and airy fonts that also have a distinct character of their own. Through consistent and regular use, we also give Malmö University a typographical identity. The headline font is Futura. Body text is set in Sabon.
The IT department is responsible for the licences for our primary fonts.
Futura
Futura is a linear font (a typeface characterised primarily by the absence of serifs). It is primarily used for larger text sizes, such as in headings and subheadings, and when text is to be read from a distance, such as on posters and outdoor billboards. The typeface also works well for shorter texts and text in relatively small sizes, such as image and table captions and similar. Futura is available in several weights. On the right are Book and Bold, which are the most commonly used.
Sabon
Sabon is a so-called antique font whose main characteristics are that the stems, crossbars and circles are of varying thickness and that it has serifs – small hooks – which help the reader's eye to follow the line easily. It is easy to read, which makes the typeface a good choice for larger amounts of running text. Sabon is available in several weights. Roman and Bold are shown on the right.
Replacement font
If there is no licence for the profile fonts, the replacement fonts Arial and Times New Roman are used. The replacement fonts are used in Word and PowerPoint templates. On the web, Open Sans is used for body text and Futura for headings.
Visual elements
Futura as a profile element
Futura as a profile element
Futura is a central part of our visual identity and also functions as a graphic element. Headings can be placed so that they extend beyond or overlap other graphic elements to create variation and support the visual expression. Words and numbers can be used as part of the design to increase readability and interest.
Heading frames
Heading frames
Malmö University uses dynamic frames as a key graphic element. The frames create visual cohesion and highlight important elements in the communication. Each row can be adjusted to create variation, and the frames can be used in all profile colours. They are used to clarify or emphasise headings and details.
