Malmö University has been awarded a grant from The Crafoord Foundation for the project Mau Performance Lecture – an artistic performance based on research. Performance Lectures at Malmö University are a concept where researchers and cultural actors collaborate to present research in a way that is both accessible and engaging to a wider audience. By combining academic research with performing arts, performances are created that not only inform but also inspire and arouse curiosity.

Researchers and cultural practitioners working together

Performance Lectures showcase different research topics at Malmö University, based on current research and societal issues. The topics vary widely and can come from all faculties. Through the lectures, the University collaborates with the independent cultural life in Malmö to work with different artistic expressions, based on what best suits the research content. Previous Performance Lectures have embodied research on atoms, supporter culture and online hate against women.

What is the working process like?

The working process lasts approximately six months and is based on close co-operation between the researcher and the artist. Initially, research questions that will form the basis of the performance are identified. The script is then developed through artistic methods, with both actively participating in the creative process. The performances are aimed at both the public and selected schools, helping to disseminate the research in an engaging way.

This approach strengthens relationships and creates opportunities for future collaborations. After the performances, several of the researchers and cultural actors have continued to collaborate, which is evidence of a long-term and sustainable partnership.

“Planning for the next Performance Lecture is in full swing and will focus on loneliness among the elderly, based on research by Associate Professor Elin Taube at the Department of Care Sciences.

What does the support from The Crafoord Foundation mean?

With the support of The Crafoord Foundation, there is now the possibility to organise two Performance Lectures per year in 2026-2027. This will allow the University to collaborate with more researchers, explore a wider variety of research topics and work with different artistic expressions. It will enable the University to offer more performances centred on research, for the benefit of staff, students, the public and schools.

“Performance Lectures are both a way to broaden our research communication and to learn more about how we, as researchers and teachers, can work with aesthetic forms of expression to explore questions and communicate results. We would like to thank the Crafoord Foundation for their contribution to Malmö University,” says Malin Ideland, pro-vice-chancellor for research and doctoral education.
