As a doctoral student, researcher or guest researcher, you can rent housing through Malmö University.
If you plan to stay in Sweden for less than one year, you will not be registered on the population register. Instead, you might need a coordination number (samordningsnummer), which can be used for identification purposes. A coordination number can be requested by, for example, the responsible contact person at the department or by another member of staff at the university. You can also apply for a coordination number yourself. You also need to book an appointment for an identity check at a service centre.
Personal identity number
If you plan to stay for one year or more, you are generally required to register in the Swedish Population register to get a Swedish personal number. Registration is done at the service centre in Malmö. During the meeting you will also be able to get personal support and help in public authority matters related to living and working in Sweden.
If you are staying for less than a year, the best option is to use your existing bank account in your home country. If you plan to stay longer than a year, opening a Swedish bank account can help ease everyday life. When you have a valid residence permit in Sweden, you are entitled to open a bank account. You are free to choose any bank of your choice. The rules are the same for all of the banks in Sweden and the routines at the banks are similar.

Sweden is largely a cashless society, and you will rarely need cash during your stay. If needed, cash can be withdrawn from ATMs, although they are becoming less common. Some stores accept cash, while others do not.
An internationally accepted payment card is essential, preferably one that supports contactless payments. Depending on the situation, you may either tap your card or enter your PIN.
If you fall ill during a temporary stay in Sweden, you are entitled to essential healthcare. To receive healthcare advice from a nurse by telephone, please call 1177.

Malmö is a cycling city. Here you cycle everywhere, all the time, all year round. You can rent bikes at over 100 different rental stations in Malmö.

The easiest way to travel on buses and trains in Malmö and throughout Skåne is by the Skånetrafiken app. On the city buses in Malmö you can tap your debit card against the payment terminal. Please note that you cannot pay with cash on any of the buses or trains.

Taxi
There are many taxi companies in Malmö to choose from. Only licensed taxi companies are allowed to provide taxi services in Sweden. Approved taxis have yellow number plates and have metered fares, the prices should be indicated on the rear door window.

Before signing up, please discuss with your head of department. After signing up, you will be invited to an interview to determine your level of Swedish and discuss placement.

Swedish for immigrants – SFI
Join a Swedish for immigrant course, for free. You will not only learn about the Swedish language but also about Swedish society and work life. You can study SFI if you are registered in the population register in the municipality of Malmö, or if you are an EU citizen with a residence permit. Even accompanying family members can study SFI.
